Introducing the Coco de Mer

The Coco de Mer is one of the most unique species in the plant kingdom, endemic to the Seychelles and found on only two islands. This extraordinary plant boasts the largest nut in the world and has fascinating reproductive legends.

Meet the Coco de Mer

With the dioecious palm having separate male and female trees, it has unique reproductive organs that resemble those of humans. Legends tell of the trees roaming the forests during full moons to mate with the female trees. The female tree has the largest nut, taking 6-10 years to mature, and the male tree has the longest flower in the world.

The Coco de Mer may also have the longest lifespan of any leaf in the plant kingdom, with leaves holding a remarkable 50-year lifespan. These enormous fan-shaped leaves are 5-8 meters in length and over 3 meters wide – the largest in the vegetable kingdom.

How we are Safeguarding its future

Cousine Island is working to introduce this majestic species to our island, collaborating with the Seychelles Island Foundation to create small satellite populations of the threatened Coco de Mer. This initiative aims to provide an insurance population in case of natural disasters or diseases affecting the original or larger population. Our efforts include creating the perfect conditions for these trees to thrive, ensuring that we can support their growth and contribute to their conservation. We are expecting a site visit from the foundation in early March to evaluate if the conditions on the island can successfully support the palm.

Join us on this journey to see if Cousine Island could become home to this magnificent species and help preserve one of nature’s most fascinating creations for future generations.

Our ongoing conservation efforts

Cousine Island’s conservation efforts go beyond the Coco de Mer. Our approach involves ongoing action and research, in collaboration with global scientists and environmental organizations. We implement various initiatives to protect endangered species, restore native vegetation, and reduce our carbon footprint. Our conservation team is dedicated to preserving the island’s biodiversity through sustainable practices and innovative solutions. By partnering with international experts, we continuously enhance our understanding and methods to ensure the longevity and health of our ecosystem. These efforts are integral to our mission, reflecting our commitment to both luxury travel and environmental stewardship.

Help us preserve biodiversity

You can contribute to our conservation mission simply by visiting the island, even Just for a Day. We invite guests to participate in our ongoing conservation efforts like indigenous tree planting, guided conservation walks, turtle breeding experiences, and excursions to uninhabited and protected islands around the archipelago. Even if you never leave the beach or only admire our incredible birdlife, you’re helping restore and preserve the environment through ecotourism. Check our eco calendar to plan your visit or rent the entire island for the ultimate private island experience.
