Join us for the Rare & Endangered Sea Turtle Nesting Season
Experience a life-changing adventure on Cousine Island by joining one of our dedicated conservation staff as they monitor a nesting sea turtle or assist hatchlings on their perilous journey to the sea. This unique opportunity allows you to witness the awe-inspiring life cycle of these ancient mariners up close, contributing to vital conservation efforts that ensure their survival.
Endangered and critically endangered sea turtles, such as the Hawksbill and Green turtles, return time and again to Cousine Island’s pristine tropical beaches to lay their eggs. The sight of a mother turtle laboriously digging a nest and depositing her precious clutch under the cover of night is a truly magical experience. Equally mesmerizing is the sight of tiny hatchlings emerging from their sandy nests, instinctively heading towards the ocean's inviting waves, guided only by the moonlight.
Our dedicated conservation team is at the heart of these efforts, tirelessly gathering data to aid in the protection and recovery of these vulnerable species. By counting nests and hatchlings, they monitor the health and success of the turtle population on the island. This crucial data helps inform broader conservation strategies and ensures that each new generation of turtles has the best possible chance of survival.
Protection from poachers is another critical aspect of our conservation work. The team vigilantly patrols the beaches, safeguarding nests from human threats and natural predators. Through these efforts, we strive to ensure that as many hatchlings as possible make it to the sea, where they will continue their journey and one day return to Cousine Island to perpetuate the cycle.
Participating in this conservation effort not only enriches your understanding of marine biology and the challenges these creatures face but also provides a profound sense of connection to nature. By supporting our conservation initiatives, you contribute to the preservation of these magnificent sea turtles for future generations. Join us on Cousine Island and be part of a meaningful and unforgettable conservation experience.
