Sustainable and Luxury on a Private Island?

Luxury and sustainability don’t always go together. Most resorts try to use “sustainability” as a marketing tactic — also known as “greenwashing”. But here at Cousine Island, we’re truly connected with nature.

We don’t just put words on paper and call ourselves “sustainable”. Cousine Island is alive, and we’re determined to protect her at all costs. Not only that, but we’re dedicated to seeing her flourish and become more beautiful than ever before.

When you embark on a private island adventure with us, you’ll get the luxury that you’re looking for. But you’ll also feel the connection of our living, breathing paradise.

It’s an opportunity to become part of something bigger. Something that will last for many generations beyond our own.

The best part is that our sustainability doesn’t detract from your experience on the island. There are no complex processes or inefficiency. We aim to provide the best experience for you whilst caring for our beautiful island and her surroundings.

The Green Initiatives that Set Us Apart

So, what are we doing to make a difference to Cousine Island’s future?

Solar power

In 2020, the completion of our solar plant marked a significant milestone for Cousine Island, proudly establishing it as the first private island in the Seychelles to be powered entirely by the sun.

Off the grid and precisely aligned with our sustainability objectives, this achievement reflects our commitment to safeguarding the island's delicate ecosystem for the prosperity of future generations.

Rainwater capture

Water, a precious resource on Cousine Island, is managed with utmost efficiency. Rainwater is captured and meticulously filtered, serving various non-potable purposes, from showering to irrigation.

Embracing our coastal location, we harness the ocean as a reliable backup, desalinating seawater when the skies are clear. Waste, too, follows a sustainable course through a professionally monitored recycling program. Biodegradables enrich our compost, while non-biodegradables are meticulously sorted for transport to recycling stations on Mahé Island, encapsulating our comprehensive approach to conservation.

Marine conservation

While marine monitoring isn't a core project, regular surveys ensure we stay attuned to the health and resilience of Cousine Island's reef, recognising the key role it plays in the face of climate change.

Our monitoring program is evolving into an extensive research initiative, keeping an eye on the benthic community, coral and fish populations, and the overall reef resilience in Seychelles. A second phase, focusing on coral planting to promote growth and habitat provision, is on our conservation horizon.

Pépinière de l'île

The rich biodiversity of Seychelles, with vulnerable and critically endangered plant and tree species, compels us to take better care of our wildlife.

Eager to share our passion for conservation, we invite guests to plant indigenous trees from our nursery, creating lasting memories and actively contributing to Cousine Island's ongoing restoration.

Preserving Paradise for Future Generations

While Cousine Island offers a luxury experience, we focus on building a legacy that transcends time – a sanctuary where every effort is made to safeguard Seychelles' pristine beauty for the generations yet to come.

We’re responsible for taking care of her. While it might be a lifetime for us, it’s only a fraction of her entire lifespan. We need to make sure that Cousine Island remains the best-preserved island in the Seychelles.

Through strategic conservation efforts, habitat preservation, and community engagement, we strive to ensure that the beauty of this hidden gem remains untouched and enchanting for the inheritors of our shared legacy.

You can also be a part of her conservation. Enjoy your stay at one of our luxury beach villas while helping this beautiful island flourish into greatness.
